il Carciofo

il Carciofo brings Roman cafe culture to Chicago’s Fulton Market

Location

Chicago, IL

Project Includes

Collaborating closely with Day Off Group on their third restaurant, Aria designed il Carciofo — a Modern Roman restaurant in the Fulton Market neighborhood of Chicago. Day Off challenged us with designing a space that showcased the freshness of their food and tie in the Roman restaurant culture. A large open kitchen runs parallel to the dining room enabling patrons visuals of food preparation and even offers counter seating next to the large pizza oven to be “in the action.” Pasta and wine are showcased with a dedicated Pasta Lab and Wine room visible from the dining room and bar respectively – immersing patrons within the fresh Roman food culture.

Details and materiality throughout merge and juxtapose design cues of Fulton Market’s industrial past and Rome’s heritage to create a diverse and inviting dining experience through warm woods, marble counters, antique metals, and comfortable seating. The patio coming this spring proves to further transport Rome’s expansive cafes and mix of indoor and outdoor to Chicago through operable windows with large awnings and umbrellas covering a sprawling 80-person patio café.
