Blueprint 2024: Henrico

The Henrico Sports & Events Center is a state-of-the-art event and championship complex featuring 12 basketball courts/24 volleyball courts, plus massive Event Space. The building’s tilt up construction provides an industrial aesthetic and large scale proportion to the interior and exterior program. Exposed tilt up concrete walls and polished concrete floors add texture while maintaining the open, industrial feel. The simple and sporty color palette is offset with warm wood millwork elements sprinkled throughout. The facility’s central program is anchored by a main bar and dining area with a concessions space leading into the gymnasium. With the expertise of acoustical consultants, the open spaces received wall and ceiling treatments including perforated metal panels, sound blanket upholstered wall panels, and a floor to ceiling vinyl curtain to minimize echo, and maintain acoustical separation between the vast, open spaces. Located just off the Interstate, this community building is a sought-after spot for sporting and entertainment opportunities, already having garnered thousands of visitors since it opened.
Knowing this facility would see an incredible number of visitors, the project team approached planning as an opportunity to prove their technical capabilities as well as design sensibilities. Even on a project of this scale, Aria’s team poured attention into the smallest of details to develop a unified, polished vision.

“Henrico really demonstrated our technical capabilities — how well we can manage all the moving parts in such a large and complex project.” – Martin Kurdaliev, Architetcural Designer
